Rainforest Alliance is a nonprofit organization that partners with farmers, corporations, and communities to reduce deforestation and encourage sustainable farming practices. Their sustainability programs include a certification program, community partnerships to restore forests and wildlife and build thriving rural communities, corporate partnerships to build strong supply chains, and advocacy work to promote social justice and human rights.
SII partnered with Rainforest Alliance to review and refine its Impact Blueprint (impact framework) and identify impact metrics for each of its five impact areas: climate, ecosystems, biodiversity, human rights, and livelihoods. The impact metrics leveraged data that Rainforest Alliance was already collecting (but not analyzing and reporting) and secondary data for benchmarking against to assess impact performance. Our partnership ensured the impact metrics reported by Rainforest Alliance were both credible to external stakeholders and useful for internal decision-making. We also developed an IMM plan that provides guidance on impact data collection, monitoring, and reporting.
